An Epilogue.

5 min read

There was only a chance, and there would only be one chance. And then it dawned on him. He remembered something Mr.Blank had said: “He is almost god, annoyingly so. But I must digress something, he may be all powerful but we do not need him, it is just that we are at his mercy. But there is one real piece of info I extracted him he could not have expected is that he is afraid of something. There is something he does not know, perhaps something that escapes his view. And if he can be scared then he can be killed. Or at least removed.”

That gave Cyrus hope. But in the blink of an eye he had spotted it. Lumis had led him to the banquet hall, a dazzling spectacle of art and desgin, but he wasn't looking at the scenery, but instead the drop. He had been led to a balcony above the stage where anouncments could be made.

Lumis was still talking. And with his back turned.

Cyrus kicked the chattering god off the pedestal and leapt after him, their two bodies descending towards the floor below.

Lumis merely grinned at the man's attempt, surely he knew this sort of thing wouldn't work, after all he had tried similar before. And in a thought time was slowed to hundredths of a second, Cyrus’s body floating in slow motion. But then Lumis found himself restrained. Unable to move. His body’s power drained from him.

“No! Wait! This is impossible! How is this happening!” He screamed.

But there was no reply, his powers had disappeared like a switch had been flipped, almost too fast to comprehend.

“Nothing is beyond me! Nothing is beyond my control! How could this happen! I am God for god's sake!”

But the abyss refused to speak. And Lumis lay on his back, falling. The ground below him and a blade above. Somehow. Someway, this human had managed to outmatch him, outsmart him.

No not possible.

The descending blade trickled through time like melting ice, the impending doom soon to come. But even with this much time Lumis found himself still detained.

He had days, maybe even a week to endure this, but eventually he would not be able to stop it.

Doom was coming and he could do little but watch, like an avalanche in slow motion.

Doom. Darkness. The Abyss. That was what awaited him. And perhaps an end to the madness. Perhaps he had become too powerful, perhaps he had become too greedy, too self-indulgent. He pondered this for a while.

No.

There was something else. Some reason why he had even become an equal to these creatures.

He looked at the man above him, ravaged by time, fate, and his own will and still aspiring and struggling to meet a satisfying end, a way to end the story, a way to fix what had been broken, or at least find peace. And then it hit him.

He had gained the one trait that he never had before.

The one thing that made humans what they were, what made them so inherently different and so powerful. But also so weak…

He had become flawed...

God's were only flawed by their inability or unwillingness to control all things and preferring to be spectators and watch the dice roll. But despite his power, he had lost his ambition, his true purpose, the meaning of why he did what he did. And all because…

No.

It wasn't possible.

He WAS all powerful. There was no blade that could stop him, no magic that could hurt him, no way he would ever be in this situation. Even if there was a way he could be killed he could just dispel it. But somehow he knew when that blade touched his body he would be ended.

It just made no sense. There had to be something else.

Life didn't work like this! There is no happy ending! There is only abyss! And the awaiting darkness! Unless…

Lumis looked at himself. And realized something. Perhaps there was something beyond him. Something controlled him. Something had control over him and it wasn't Cyrus or any magic.

He eyes widened.

Deux ex Machina.” He whispered to himself.

And in one swift movement Lumis was severed in half, his body dissipating into dust.

And in one last gasp of breath:

“Like tears in rain, I am lost.”

Cyrus blinked. The golden robes disintegrating as watched. Was that it, was over?

Cyrus crashed to the floor below, the sword skating across the ground from him. And his body felt broken into pieces He had fallen a long ways, but it still nothing like his time falling from that bridge oh so long ago…

He was surprised he still remembered that. But Cyrus waited for a moment, he hadn't won yet. He lifted his head to look around, the god was prone to his tricks and certainly wouldn't miss a chance to ridicule him. But there was no response. Golden dust littered the floor and no harassing god appeared to belittle him.

Had he really done it? Had he really destroyed the god that had plagued him from every moment of his life? Had he finally won? Cyrus got on one knee. There was no reason for Lumis not to show up now. But even so Cyrus was reluctant.

Cyrus made the effort to make himself stand, wobbling while doing so. And slowly he made his way to the control panel. And recorded a message. “God is dead, and I have killed him.” And with that Cyrus slumped to the ground with his back to the desk, and with eyes blinking he slowly fell asleep.
